Berlin is a chamaleon. Once you think you've finally understood this city, you experience yet another newer (and even more exciting) version. Let's start by stating there is so much recent history, art, culture and diversity within its neighbourhoods that it would be hard to find an adjective to describe or define it as a whole. There are just so many layers to peel off this city and precisely that's what makes it so fantastic and intriguing. Art critic Karl Scheffler described it perfectly in 1910: Berlin is condemned ever to becoming, never to being.
Last summer I spent the most incredible week at this city. From amazing concerts and nightlife to long walks along the Spree, Berlin has so much to offer and caters to every taste out there. Since this was my third time in the city I didn't really visit lots of museums, but I did go to the German Historical Museum, one of the best ones in town. This is a must if you're a history geek!
Treptower Park was one of the new places I visited. If you like long promenades with views of Berlin's interesting cityscape, then I definitely recommend you to check it out! I went there with my uncle who has lived in this city for more than 20 years now. It was really special since he knows the city inside out and feels right at home here.
At this point I want to ask you a question. Do you really want to get to know Berlin?
Then participate in one of the tours by Route 44 of the Kultur bewegt e.V. in Neukölln. All the tour guides are women who live in this area and have so many stories to share with you. I participated in the "Neukölln Oneway" guided walk with Gül-Aynur und Hanadi Mourad and it was an eye opener to a side of Berlin I knew existed, but hadn't experienced until now. Gül is Turkish and came to Germany when she was a little girl with her mother who moved here to work as a Gastarbeiter. Hanadi came from Lebanon escaping war. Both grew up in Neukölln, a neighbourhood whose bad reputation makes it a place most tourists avoid during their time here.
Immigration is part of the configuration of this place. During the 18th century Neukölln was called Rixdorf and was the home of Bohemian immigrants who were persecuted because of their religious beliefs. You can still see remnants of their time here in the Bohemian town. Another wonderful stop is the Comenius garden in the heart of Rixdorf. One old man takes care of this public garden and teaches children about trees and harvest. One thing you notice when you stroll around this place is that there are no signs like the usual "it is forbidden to...". If I had to choose a definition for an oasis within the city, it would be this place. The last stop is the house of Gül's mother, where we actually met the crazy woman who talks to her ring and always complains with Gül about the guided walks. This was the most refreshing tour I've ever participated in and both guides make it so easy for those who take part to discover new ideas and to contemplate old concepts from a different perspective. Thank you Gül and Hanadi!
Charlottenburg is another nice neighbourhood to check out. It boasts the wonderful Charlottenburg palace and it is ideal for a different experience than that of the busy streets and avenues of Berlin-Mitte, where you'll find all the landmarks Berlin is known for: Unter den Linden boulevard, Brandenburg gate, Museum island, Reichstag, Potsdamer Platz, Alexanderplatz, Gendarmenmarkt with its churches, and many more.
If you happen to stay long enough, take a look at the Nikolaiviertel, the historical heart of Berlin. It is here where the city was founded around 1200 as a small settlement by the river. It contains the oldest church of Berlin and is worth checking out because you literally feel like you're at a little town within this huge metropolis.
Berlin is known for its awesome cultural scene. Check out gigs before you go and you might have the chance to see some of your favourite acts. I went to see Foals with my brother at the Kulturbrauerei and it was so good! My absolute favourite night in Berlin. If you're into partying, then don't miss Kotti for a fun night out. I went there with my cousin and brother and we had a blast! This area has something to say about the multicultural and tolerant side of Berlin.
I really don't care if it has become the hipster capital of Europe. I'll always have enough reasons to visit this city.
Trust me, a trip to Berlin is always worth it.
