Abu Serga church, the place where the Holy Family lived

By 1:23 p.m.

Abu Serga church is one of the oldest churches in Coptic Cairo and perhaps the most interesting feature about it, is that it is said to have been built on the spot where the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and Jesus Christ rested after the end of their journey into Egypt.

It is believed that they lived here while Joseph worked at the nearby Babylon Fortress. The structure dates back to the 4th century, but it was burned by a fire and restored in the 8th century and on many more occasions during medieval times; however, it is considered to be a great example of early Coptic churches.

Saints Sergius and Bacchus church, how it is also called, is very well-kept and hosts precious icons located on the southern wall. If I had to pick a favorite between all the churches I visited in this part of town, I think I would choose this one, because of the impressive feeling I had of walking inside a place where the passing of time seems not to have altered a single thing.

The crypt where the Holy Family lived lies 10 metres deep, and when the Nile levels are high, it is often flooded.

Abu Serga church is said to have been built on the spot where the Holy Family lived.

Saints Sergius and Bacchus were soldier-saints martyred during the 4th century in Syria. The church was named after them.
